Maranatha Church, Deventer

The Maranatha Church first opened its doors in 1992. This unique Moluccan church is hidden in a residential area in Deventer. It was designed by the famous architect couple of Aldo and Hannie van Eyck. Once inside, you can almost imagine yourself on the Moluccas. A stunning line pattern of shells is visible on the walls throughout the church. This is the artwork ‘Flying Lines’ by Iene Ambar. The work was specially designed for the Maranatha Church, with mother-of-pearl shells sourced from the Moluccas. Both the design of the church and the artwork in the church were created in consultation with the community. This makes the church a great example of co-creation.
