Portuguese Synagogue, Amsterdam

The Portuguese Synagogue stands in the middle of the former Jewish Quarter of the city. For a long time this imposing building was the largest synagogue in the world. Step inside and you will be surprised at how spacious and airy the interior is, with its gleaming brass chandeliers and candlesticks. The candlesticks can take several thousand candles, and they are still the only source of illumination after all these years. It is a sight never to be forgotten, particularly in the winter months.

Visit one of the monthly concerts to experience the Portuguese Synagoge by candle light. For more information visit the website of the Jewish Cultural Quarter.
